The Classic Shetland mare herd at Cheg-Kim Ponies has been developed from the
best of our home bred stock and the best of what other breeders throughout the
Midwest have had to offer. Some of our early foundation broodmares came from
the herds of Ted Hester and R.H. Risley. Our first herdsire was Hester's Red
Pinrod who we also purchased from Ted Hester. Our first ASPC registered foals
were born in 1984 and as they say the rest is history!
We strive to raise a foal with an excellent disposition that is easily trained. To do
that requires mares with excellent dispositions who are easily trained and this has
always been the deciding factor when we consider mares to retain as broodmares
(or consider adding an outside mare to the herd). A mare may only be 50% of the
foal genetically but she is the environmental factor that most influences the type of
pony that foal will be later in life.
